As of my last update in September 2021, the tallest building in the world is still the Burj Khalifa, located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Construction of tall buildings has been a part of human history for centuries, but the concept of skyscrapers, as we know them today, began to emerge in the late 19th century. Here's a brief timeline of key milestones in the development of tall buildings:

  1. Home Insurance Building (1885): Considered the world's first skyscraper, the Home Insurance Building was constructed in Chicago, USA. It stood around 42 meters (138 feet) tall and was one of the first buildings to use a metal frame to support its structure.

  2. The Eiffel Tower (1889): While not a traditional building, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, was a groundbreaking structure in its time, standing at 324 meters (1,063 feet) tall. It held the title of the world's tallest man-made structure until the completion of the Chrysler Building in 1930.

  3. Chrysler Building (1930): Located in New York City, USA, the Chrysler Building reached a height of 319 meters (1,046 feet) and briefly held the title of the world's tallest building before being surpassed by the Empire State Building.

  4. Empire State Building (1931): Also situated in New York City, the Empire State Building became an iconic skyscraper standing at 381 meters (1,250 feet) tall at its tip. It held the record as the world's tallest building until 1971.

  5. World Trade Center Twin Towers (1971): Located in New York City, the North Tower and South Tower of the World Trade Center complex reached a height of 417 meters (1,368 feet) and 415 meters (1,362 feet), respectively.

  6. Petronas Towers (1998): Located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the Petronas Towers were the tallest buildings in the world from 1998 to 2004, reaching a height of 452 meters (1,483 feet).

  7. Burj Khalifa (2010): As mentioned earlier, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, UAE, surpassed all previous records and reached a height of approximately 828 meters (2,717 feet) when it was completed in 2010.

Since the Burj Khalifa's completion in 2010, there have been discussions and plans for even taller buildings, but as of my last update, no building has surpassed its height. However, please note that new developments and constructions might have occurred after my last update, so I recommend checking more recent sources for the latest information on the world's tallest building.
