New Delhi, July 2025:
In a major push toward cleaner air and sustainable urban mobility, the Delhi government has implemented a strict ban on the fuel supply to end-of-life (EOL) vehicles from July 1, 2025. The move targets diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years that have been deregistered and are no longer legally permitted on Delhi roads under existing National Green Tribunal (NGT) and Supreme Court directives.
Why the Ban?
This decision is part of a broader effort by the Delhi government to curb vehicular pollution, which is one of the leading contributors to the capital’s deteriorating air quality. Despite clear court rulings mandating the scrapping of old polluting vehicles, many continue to operate illegally. The new ban aims to enforce compliance by cutting off fuel access, making it practically impossible for these vehicles to run.
Implementation and Enforcement
The Delhi Transport Department, in coordination with fuel station operators and law enforcement agencies, has rolled out strict monitoring protocols. Fuel pumps have been instructed not to provide petrol or diesel to any vehicle flagged as EOL in the VAHAN database — India’s national vehicle registry. Automated checks and QR code systems are being used at pumps to verify the legal status of vehicles.
Penalties and Public Awareness
Fuel stations found violating the order will face heavy penalties, and vehicle owners may be subject to fines or legal action if caught attempting to bypass the ban. The Delhi government has also launched a public awareness campaign, urging residents to check the registration status of their vehicles and shift to cleaner alternatives such as electric vehicles (EVs), CNG, or public transport.
What This Means for Vehicle Owners
Owners of older vehicles are encouraged to:
-
Verify the age and status of their vehicle on the VAHAN portal.
-
Opt for vehicle scrapping under certified programs.
-
Consider replacing their vehicles with newer, compliant, and eco-friendly models.
A Step Towards Greener Delhi
Delhi’s policy is in line with the larger national goals under the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme and State EV Policy targets. The fuel supply ban is expected to significantly reduce vehicular emissions and send a strong message on the importance of compliance with environmental norms.
